1,000 STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM GBEMIGA ABIODUN MEMORIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME

1,000 students in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions across Ogun State have been supported with cash awards through Gbemiga Abiodun Memorial Education Support Programme, a foundation established to keep alive the memory of the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun’s son, Gbemiga, who died on October 7, 2017. 


The foundation awarded N39,750,000 to 159 beneficiaries from nine tertiary institutions in the state, while N14,700,000 was given to 294 primary school pupils and N36,600,000 to 366 secondary school students across Ikenne, Remo-North and Sagamu Local Government Area of the state.

Governor Abiodun, speaking during the ceremony, at Christ Apostolic Grammar School in Iperu-Remo, described his late son as an entrepreneur, full of life and extremely generous to people, revealing that the foundation had a new initiative called, "The Creative Students Category", in honour of the creative industry which his son belonged.

"If Gbemiga had N100 and you asked for his support, he would give you the entire 100 before remembering to keep five Naira for himself", he said.

He stated that the programme, which began in 2023 with around 600 beneficiaries, has now added 400 more students across the same categories, promising that his family would continue to increase the number of recipients, while expanding the programme to other local governments in the state.

The governor expressed joy that though his family lost a son, they had gained thousands of children through the initiative.

On his part, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, who doubles as a Consultant to the foundation, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, commended Governor Abiodun for establishing the scholarship in memory of his late son and encouraged the beneficiaries to excel in their studies.

In his remarks, the foundation’s coordinator, Revd. Bola Oyeledun, emphasised that the foundation was not just providing financial aid but also supporting and monitoring the beneficiaries throughout their educational journey, appealing to heads of institutions to keep their doors open to the foundation.

Some beneficiaries from primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, Soliat Yahaya, Goodluck Adebanjo and Evelyn Falaye, respectively, thanked Governor Abiodun and his family for the educational support, enthusing that the initiative would assist in meeting their educational needs.

Highlight on the event was presentation of cheques to the heads of tertiary institutions and parents of pupils and students from primary and secondary schools in the state.

OGSHIA: SECONDARY HEALTH FACILITIES RECEIVE ICT GADGETS FOR DATA CAPTURING, TRANSMISSION

Determined to provide better health service delivery for citizens and residents who have embraced and enrolled with the Ogun State Health Insurance Agency (OGSHIA), the state Hospitals Management Board (HMB), has procured and distributed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) gadgets, including Tablets to government's General Hospitals across the state.

While presenting the gadgets to the Chief Medical Directors and Desk Officers of the Hospitals, Permanent Secretary of the Board, Dr. Yinka Elemide, disclosed that the ICT tools would improve data capturing and gathering of patients' information.

Dr. Elemide added that the gadgets, which had OGSHIA compliance application installed, along with password enabled goggle sheet, would aid in accurate and prompt submission of data, thereby ensuring effective and efficient health care services to the people.

"As we all know that insurance is actually the way to go and if we don't have our data well captured and promptly transmitted to the appropriate quarters, it would affect our reporting and that is how we can evaluate our processes, monitor and know how well we are doing", he said.

The Permanent Secretary, who disclosed that Data Officers across all the secondary health facilities had undergone training to effectively operate the gadgets, charged them to be diligent and justify the resources expended on the Tablets.

Appreciating the state government for procuring the gadgets, Chief Medical Directors, Oba Ademola Maternity Hospital, Dr. Olugbenga Taiwo and his counterpart from Olikoye Ransom Kuti Memorial Hospital, Dr. Olujimi Dipeolu, said the gadgets would facilitate seamless capturing and prompt submission of data to appropriate quarters.

OGUN HEALTH MINISTRY ORGANISES ICT TRAINING TO ENHANCE SERVICE DELIVERY

In a proactive move to bolster the capacity of its workforce, Ogun State Ministry of Health has organised an Information Communication Technology (ICT) training programme for its staff.

Speaking during the training at the Ministry's Conference Room, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Kayode Oladehinde, represented by the agency's Director of ICT, Mrs. Tunrayo Odumuyiwa, highlighted the importance of ICT, noting that the training would enhance work delivery.

“As we continue to navigate the complexities of this new era of technology, it is imperative that our staff are well-equipped with the necessary technological skills. This training is not just about learning new software; it’s about changing the way we deliver services, making them more efficient and accessible to our people", he said.

          The Permanent Secretary disclosed that the training would be done on quarterly basis, saying the exercise would equip health staff with essential digital skills, in line with the state government’s commitment to improving civil servants' delivery through technological integration.

Delivering a lecture on Data Analysis and its Use, the guest lecturer from Bureau of Information Technology, Ogun TechHub, Kobape, Abeokuta, Mr. Temitayo Osanyinbi, said participants must be passionate about computer operations, including all components of a computer system.

Speaking on Mail Merging, he advised participants to always make use of this aspect of computer to make their work easier and faster, especially when dealing with memos and mails.

One of the participants, Mrs. Temidayo Kuye, who expressed enthusiasm that the training would have positive impact on their daily operations and improve productivity, appreciated the Ministry for the opportunity, promising to apply the skills in daily operations.

NIGERIAN ARMY RECRUITMENT FOR 88 REGULAR RECRUITS ENDS NOV. 8

The Nigeria Army recruitment exercise for the 88 Regular recruitment for the Trades/non-Trades men and women online registration will end on Friday, November 8, 2024.

A release signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Bureau of Cabinet and Special Services, Mr. Olanrewaju Saka, indicated that the application form could be accessed online at https://recruitment.army.mil.ng, with all applications screened online, while qualified applicants would be shortlisted afterwards.

It stated that applicants must be single, Nigeria citizen by birth and must possess a valid National Identity Number (NIN), just as they must be medically, physically and psychologically fit, free of any criminal conviction, as well as be between the ages of 18 and 22 years, for Non-trades men and women, while 18 to 26 years would be for Trades men and women, indicating that the required height is  1.68meter for males and 1.65 meters for females.

The release further stated that applicants must possess a minimum of 4 passes at not more than two sittings in WASSCE/GCE/NECO/NABTEB, while Trades men and women must have Trade Test/City and Guild Certificate, noting that shortlisted applicants from the online screening should report for Physical Screening Exercise at the State Recruitment Centre, 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala Baracks, Abeokuta, from Thursday, December 5 to Thursday, December 19, 2024.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has disclosed that his administration is committed to ensuring  a peaceful co-existence among diverse religious groups that will promote free heart of worship without fear or acrimony

Governor Abiodun made this known during the conferment of the Amir Ul Mulukil Muslimin Fi Bilad (Commander of Muslim Kings) in Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states on the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, at his pavilion in Ijebu-Ode.

The Governor noted that mutual respect among all religions and traditional institutions was in line with the rich history of tolerance and unity in diversity, commending leaders of various faiths in the state for their efforts in maintaining peace and fostering interfaith dialogue.

Abiodun, who stated that Oba Adetona embodies the qualities of compassion of wisdom and integrity, added that the title conferred on him was a beacon of unity and peace, commending the Monarch for his zero tolerance, indiscipline and his philanthropic passion.

In his message, the Chairman, Governing Council of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ojere, Abeokuta, Prof. Kamaldeen Balogun, who described Awujale as a friendly Royal Father, said the title conferment on him was worthwhile, urging the Monarch to work towards ensuring that the law allowing kings to be buried according to their religious beliefs is implemented in Yorubaland and to further promote education through empowerment and building of a Muslim library.

OGSG, UNFPA TRAIN COUNSELORS IN SCHOOLS OF DISABILITIES

As part of efforts to promote inclusive education and address the unique needs of students with disabilities, Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has trained counselors in schools of disability.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, in her keynote address at the two-day capacity-building programme for counselors in the schools of disabilities on comprehensive sexuality education, at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said it was imperative to enhance better relationships and equip students with disabilities knowledge and support that would inform decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.

Adeleye stressed that knowledge of sexuality education was crucial for the students to understand their rights, body anatomy, and health, as well as enabling them to make informed decisions that would enhance their lives, saying the impact of the conversations would shape healthy relationships, builds self-esteem, and most importantly, promotes a culture of respect for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.

The Commissioner noted that the state government was determined at ensuring that students with disabilities receive the support and resources, prioritising inclusive education towards creating a more equitable and empowering learning environment for all students.

 ‘’This training will create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that fosters academic success, social integration, and emotional well-being for the students, hoping that what is being impacted to counselors here will be transferred to the students to prevent them from sexual abuse and exploitation’’, she noted.

Earlier in her address, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Adejumoke Adewole, said the significant of the training was to equip the counselors with tools and knowledge necessary to champion comprehensive sexually education in schools, to enable the students understand their bodies, make informed decisions and recognise their rights, for them to be treated with dignity and respect in the society.

In her lecture, a facilitator, Mrs. Bosede Oderinde stated that the training was to re-orientate the counselors on expected teaching methodology that would address issues of students living with disabilities being the most vulnerable of sexual abuse, advising participants to make a difference in the lives of the students for them to make informed decisions.

Responding, two of the participants, Mr. Micheal Aiyenero and Mrs. Rafiat Akinlabi appreciated organiser of the training, promising to use strategies and knowledge acquired to make the students to be more conscious of themselves and guide against all forms of abuses.

NSF: OGUN BEGINS RECONSTRUCTION WORKS IN SPORTING FACILITIES

Ahead of the National Sports Festival tagged, "2024 GATEWAY GAMES", holding between January 12 and January 26, 2025, the Ogun State government has commenced reconstruction and renovation of MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto and Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta.

Speaking after inspecting the two facilities, Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka said the renovation would be completed within the stipulated time, and tested before the games.

Hon. Isiaka disclosed that scraping of the pitch and removal of the tartan tracks at the mainbowl of the stadium was ongoing, saying its VIP section would be increased, while construction of new sporting  facilities, such as an olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis and handball courts would also be carried out, adding that removal of dilapidated roofs at the indoor hall of Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja was on course.

The Commissioner restated the state government’s commitment to hold a befitting festival, as standardised facilities would be put in place to attract National and International events, noting that young athletes had been discovered and nurtured to represent the state.

"Ogun State is making effort on the successful hosting of the 2024 National Sports Festival, and I assure you that the MKO Abiola Stadium, which is under a major renovation will be completed in due time, as part of the state government's strides to boost sports tourism for economic growth", he said.

PROCUREMENT EXPERTS IDENTIFY TRANSPARENCY, ACCOUNTABILITY FOR STANDARD BIDDING DOCUMENTS

Transparency, accountability and fairness have been identified as some of the requirements to be adopted for standard bidding documents in procurement activities.

A Procurement Reform Specialist in the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), Engr. Bashiru Olayiwola stated this during a four-day training in the Bureau's Conference Hall, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, on the use of Standard Bidding Documents for selected Heads of Procurement Unit in all procuring entities across the state.

Engr. Olayiwola said it was crucial for Procurement Officers to familiarise themselves with the use of Standard Bidding Documents, so as to ensure bidders for prospective projects comply with the provision of the law, guidelines and regulations to achieve value for money.

‘’There is a need for accountability, transparency, fairness and competitiveness in the procurement process and the adoption of the use of bidding documents that will help in that aspect, as well as to regulate the procurement of goods, works and Services", he said.

In her goodwill message, the Bureau's Coordinator, Mrs. Bolarinwa Adebowale admonished participants at the training to be focused, attentive and utilise skills acquired for effective service delivery in their procurement activities.

On his part, Director, Monitoring Evaluation, Compliance and Enforcement, Mr. Akindele Akinrinmade said the up-to-date knowledge and skills were needed in procurement preparation and usage in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government, tertiary institutions and Local Governments.

Also speaking, one of the facilitators, Mr. Jimoh Rafiu, who highlighted the use of standard bidding documents as a way of promoting standardise bidding documents for goods, and request for proposal to prospective service providers by giving equal, simultaneous information and opportunities to all bidders without any bias or errors, to achieve value for money.

Speaking on behalf of other participants at, Mrs. Ajoke Usman Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, and Mr. Oluwatosin Adejobi from Ogun State Internal Revenue Service, said the training was an eye opener that would help them in their respective offices.
