OGUN HoS EMPHASISES ON SIGNIFICANCE OF LG TO GRASSROOTS DEVT

It is essential to reposition and strengthen the Local Government, due to its critical role in the implementation of government objectives, policies and programmes, with direct impact on wellbeing of the people at the grassroots.


The Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, made this known at the Obas' Complex, Oke- Mosan, Abeokuta., while delivering a keynote address at a public lecture marking the 2024 Local Government Service week, with the theme, "Repositioning Local Government Service to a point of reference in the Public Service".

Mr. Onasanya said administration at the local government level was to ensure grassroots development, serving as a bridge between citizens and the broader objectives of governance, adding that theme of the event aligned with the ongoing efforts of Prince Dapo Abiodun led-administration, to enhance public service delivery at all tiers of government.

He urged the Local Government administrators to make good use of the autonomy granted to them by the Federal Government, to increase Internally Generated Revenue, for the growth and development of the council areas in the state.

Earlier in her address, the Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Ms. Olubunkonla Onabanjo, said Local Government was a reference point at ensuring public service delivery, appreciating Governor Dapo Abiodun for his moral and financial support to the 20 LGs in the state.

In his goodwill message, the Olowu of Owu, Oba (Prof.) Saka Matemilola commended the efforts of the Local Government Service Commission for organising the week, urging its staffers to take advantage of the new status to improve their service delivery at the grassroots.

Also speaking, Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission, Engr. Adenike Ogunbona appreciated Governor Abiodun for his immense contributions to the growth of the Local Government in the state, and the Head of Service for his leadership role and human resource development initiative.

EMPLOYMENT GENERATION, KEY TO  A VIRILE ECONOMY-OGUN HoS

 Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya says employment generation is a critical driver of the prosperity and economic development of a nation.

Mr. Onasanya, stated this when he received the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the maiden edition of Ogun State Employment Conference, led by its Chairman and Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola, in his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The Head of Service, who lamented that unemployment stifles innovation and economic progress, called on stakeholders to harness all forces towards fighting the scourge that breeds poverty and other social vices.

 He pointing out that the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun was a promoter of job creation since he assumed office in 2019, with the establishment of a Jobs Portal, which provided opportunities for many youths to link up with various employers beyond the borders of the state.

‘’A programme of the present administration has employment generation at the background given the significance of letter 'Y' which stands for Youth Empowerment in the ISEYA mantra of the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led government’’, Mr.Onasanya said.

The Head of Service, noted that the success of the maiden edition of the Employment Conference held between October 11 and 12, 2023 was second to none, expressing optimism that the initiative would address the challenge of unemployment in the country.

He admonished the Committee to work towards bridging the gaps between the organised private sector and unemployed youths, noting that the recommendations which emanated from the conference should be followed to the latter.

According to him, Ogun is blessed with both human and natural resources. Our state is not just the Gateway but the industrial capital of Nigeria and the investment destination of choice. Your team has a role to play in bringing on board all stakeholders to bridge the gap between unemployment and our rich resources, especially putting the state on a sound footing.

Earlier, Chairman of the LOC, Ogun State Employment Conference, Dr. Aikulola, said the committee came up with a report based on the recommendations of the well-engaging conference which was organised in conjunction with German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

He said efforts were in top-gear to hold a Job Fair as an appropriate follow up to the Employment Conference, saying, ‘’the Job Fair would be hybrid in nature, serving as avenue to bring together stakeholders with capacity to employ and prospective employees who will be trained freely on soft skills that will accentuate their employability’’.

INFORMATION MINISTRY HONORS RETIRING STAFF

Ogun State Ministry of Information and Strategy, has honored a retiring Chief Superintendent of Press, Mr. Ademola Banjo today, as he bows out of the Civil Service, after 35 years of meritorious service.

Speaking at the send-off ceremony in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr. Waheed Adesina, described Mr. Banjo as an epitome of generosity and diligence, who discharged his duties with high sense of responsibility.

Mr. Adesina, while recounting his relationship with the retiring staff, said he was an administrator that was conversant with the rudiments of the Civil Service, noting that Mr. Banjo would be missed by the management and other staffers of the Ministry,

The Permanent Secretary advised him to always engage in various exercises, and regular check-up, in order to keep him physical and mentally fit, praying for sound health after retirement, enjoining officers to emulate his good deeds while in service.

Also speaking, a Director of Information, Public Enlightenment in the Ministry, Mr. Seyi Oladimeji, and his counterpart in the Production Services, Mrs. Kemi Ewedairo-Yussuf, said Mr. Banjo was an open-minded and resilient staff, who had no tolerance for negative response towards his work.

In his remarks, a friend of the retiring staff, Mr. Razaq Solanke, who described him as goal getter, a good friend and a man with good vision, eulogised his good record throughout his service year.

 Responding, Mr. Banjo thanked God for spearing his life till his retirement, appreciating the management and staff in the ministry for the kind gesture.

GOV. ABIODUN'S AIDE RENOVATES CLASSROOMS

Towards ensuring conducive teaching and learning environment, Special Adviser to Ogun State Governor on Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, has renovated Two Blocks of 10 classrooms at St. Paul's Anglican Primary School I, Sagamu.

Mrs. Soyombo, during the commissioning of the renovated classrooms, said the gesture was to complement government's effort in providing a befitting education system to the citizenry, assuring that part of the building set aside as computer rooms would soon be equipped with 50 sets of computers, to further make learners digitally literate.

The Governor’s aide, said the gesture to renovate her father's Alma mater, was necessitated by the need to support the present government in its quest to provide qualitative education, urging public-spirited individuals and corporate bodies in the state, to adopt a school for constructions, rehabilitation and renovation.

"I like to implore the sons and daughters of Sagamu land to adopt a school, so that the glory of our schools can come back and for each school to be transformed for required standard of education", Soyombo said.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu commended the donor for giving back to the society, assuring that the ministry would ensure provision of furniture to all the classes for easy learning process of the pupils.

Also speaking, his counterpart in the Environment Ministry, Hon. Ola Oresanya described the gesture as selfless and zealous, calling on others to emulate the good deed, in order to build a great future for the education sector in the state.

On his part, Chairman Trade Union Congress, Ogun State Chapter, Com. Akeem Lasisi said the initiative was community-driven, which would be beneficial to the future generation, advising learners to see themselves as direct beneficiaries.

In their goodwill messages, the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba (Dr.) Babatunde Ajayi, represented by Elemuren of Emuren, Oba Adesegun Alowonle, Aminisan of Okoland, Oba Gabriel Odunayo, Asiwaju of Remoland, Chief Solomon Onafowokan described the project as a worthwhile development in Sagamu.

In her welcome address, the School Headteacher, Mrs. Bantale Oluleye, represented by Mrs. Janet Odunuga, appreciated the donor for the project, promising to make good use of the classrooms.

OGUN WRESTLING ASSOCIATION SOLICITS FOR GOVT SUPPORT

Ogun State Wrestling Association has solicited the support of the state government for the provision of Wrestling Mats equipment that will aid the performance of members in major competitions.

Chairman of the Association, Dr. Abimbola Babalola, made the appeal, during a courtesy visit to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports Development, Mr. Lanre Ogunyinka, in Abeokuta, calling for more wrestlers ahead of the forthcoming 3rd Governor Diri National Wrestling Championship in Bayelsa State.

While presenting one of the gold medalists at the last National Youth games in Asaba, Delta State, Miss Adekanbi Jesutofunmi, to the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Babalola appreciated the Dapo Abiodun-led administration for its efforts towards the development of sports, particularly wrestling, in the state.

Dr. Babalola noted that Ogun occupied the second spot in the Nigeria Wrestling Federation ranking, saying the wrestlers were poised to dethrone Delta State if necessary resources were provided for them.

Responding, Mr. Lanre Ogunyinka restated the commitment of the present administration to change the face of sports in the state, as sports had become a beacon of hope to athletes in the state, noting that the development of grassroots sports by the government had been yielding positive results.

Mr. Ogunyinka pointed out that the decision to host the forthcoming National Sports Festival was part of the efforts of the state government to upgrade various sports facilities, thereby improving the socio-economic status of the state, adding that athletes discovered at the grassroots would represent the state at national and international competitions.

 OGUN SUBEB STEPS UP EFFORT ON QUALITY BASIC EDUCATION DELIVERY

As part of efforts to achieve academic excellence in basic education in primary and junior levels, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has trained Education Secretaries in the 20 Local Governments Education Authorities (LGEA).

 Chairman, SUBEB, Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, while speaking at a day workshop organised by the Department of Management Services (DMS) of the Board for the Secretaries in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said it was imperative to improve the skill of Education Secretaries, as they serve as primary platform of education system at the grassroots.

Dr. Majekodunmi, stated that the workshop would create avenue for participants to cross-fertilise ideas, foster collaboration, and align with global best practices, for the successful implementation of the state government education policy.

He reiterated the Board’s commitment to improving teachers' welfare, ensure safety of learners, as well as provide conducive teaching and learning environment in schools under its jurisdiction, enjoining participants to support teachers’ capacity building initiative at various levels, champion education innovation, as well as ensure robust accountability and transparency in their domain.

In his presentation titled, ‘’Structure and Functions of Local Government Education Authorities’’, the Boards’ Secretary, Dr. Mikhail Lawal emphasised the need to widened the horizon of Education Secretaries, adding that the training would enable the participants to discharge their duties efficiently, as well as know their roles and responsibilities at their respective areas.

On his part, Director of Administration and Supplies in the Board, Mr. Olufemi Fatade, while delivering a paper titled, "State Basic Education Law and Policies As it Affects LGEA", represented by the Administrative Officer in Imeko-Afon LGEA, Mr. Niyi Olanite said Universal Basic Education in Nigeria, as recognised by section 15(i) of child’s Right Act of 2003; was to allow for free education for every child, and to provide qualitative basic education.

Contributing, Director of Finance and Accounts in the Board, Mr. Yemi Bamgbose, who spoke on,’’ Finance and its Management in the LGEA’’, stated that effective financial management in the Local Government and SUBEB, was essential in fostering educational environment that meets the need of the pupils, saying transparency, accountability and strategic resource allocation were hallmark to brighter future for basic education in the country.    

Speaking on behalf of other participants, Education Secretary in Ifo Local Government, Mr. Rasheed Akintoye lauded the organiser for the training, promising to apply the knowledge gained for the progress of the Board.

OGSIEC URGES POLITICAL PARTIES TO PRESENT CREDIBLE CANDIDATES

Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), has called on political parties to present the best of their candidates with credible credentials for the forthcoming polls in November 2024.

Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Babatunde Osibodu stated this at the ongoing screening exercise for Councillorship candidates, at the Commission's headquarters in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.

According to the Chairman, "the screening exercise is going on well, political parties have presented their candidates for screening and everyone is being attended to".

He noted that the Commission would conclude the exercise this week, saying any spillover of candidates for both Chairmanship and Councilorship would be given consideration in the following week, pointing out that "if for any reason, a candidate is disqualified, the party would have to present another candidate for screening".

The electoral umpire implored political parties to cooperate with OGSIEC in order to have a seamless election, while charging the youths to participate in politics by joining   political parties of their choice and be part of decision-making process for the benefits of the good people of state.

In their separate remarks, Councilorship candidates, Mrs. Oluranti Subair from Iju ward 7 and Mr. Ebenezer Adesanmi from Ifo ward 3, commended OGSIEC for the smooth conduct of the screening exercise, saying the process had been hitch-free.
