President Tinubu Declares State of Emergency in Rivers State
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution as amended. This decision comes after escalating tensions and a prolonged political crisis in the state.
In a nationwide broadcast, President Tinubu expressed concerns over the crisis, which has rendered the state ungovernable. He highlighted the demolition of the state's House of Assembly by Governor Siminalayi Fubra in December 2023, which has yet to be rebuilt.
The President suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the state's House of Assembly for six months. Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas (Rtd) has been appointed as the administrator of Rivers State for the next six months.
During this period, the administrator will not have the power to make new laws but can formulate regulations subject to approval by the Federal Executive Council and the President. The declaration does not affect the judicial arm of Rivers State, which will continue to function as usual.
This development is aimed at restoring peace, order, and good governance in Rivers State hoping that this intervention will prompt the contending parties to recognize their constitutional responsibilities.
