Odo Pako Bridge Collapse Brings Economic Activity to a Standstill
The recent collapse of the Odo Pako bridge in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area has significantly impacted economic activities in the region, which serves as a major connector to Lagos Metropolis.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, revealed this during a joint inspection with the Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Alhaji Lawal Wasiu in Ota.
According to Oresanya, the dredging activities by the Lagos State government contributed to the collapse by exposing the bridge's basement to water, compounded by the heavy flow from Anglican Road saying this has brought to the forefront the need for collaborative efforts to address environmental issues between state and local governments.
"The dredging activities by the Lagos State government contribute immensely to collapse as well exposing the bridge's basement to water including heavy flow of water from Anglican Road highlighting some temporary Measures and Palliative Relief that in no doubt will alleviate the impact, saying palliative measures to allow light vehicle movement until the bridge is reconstructed," he said.
Also speaking , the Chairman, Alhaji Lawal Adewale Wasiu FCA, assured the community that the local government would implement palliative measures promptly, emphasizing his role in facilitating the state government's response to ensure the community remains connected to economic activities.
Lawal explained that the inspection team visited Ijako, where Nehemiah Grace Developers Limited's river sand filling activities led to a partial collapse of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway adding that commissioner Ola Oresanya has ordered the sealing of the site for further investigation.
He added that Ogun State Protection Agency (OGEPA) is working assiduously to promote environmental best practices and regulate the manufacturing, processing, distribution, and use of chemicals and other pollutants demonstrating a proactive approach to addressing environmental hazards and promoting development in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government.
Lawal further explained that OGEPA plays a crucial role in enforcing environmental laws, regulating industrial activities, and promoting sustainable development in the state saying the agency's efforts aim to mitigate environmental hazards and ensure that businesses operate responsibly.
